In 1980 Soviet Union hosted controversial summer Olympics where 65 countries led by United States boycotted the games. This year Russia is hosting Sochi winter Olympics which is already surrounded by controversies due to Russia’s anti gay laws.
In 1980 West Germany prepared Moscow’s Sheremetyovo airport, gateway to the communist world. A western country preparing the airport terminal for the Soviet Union was considered as a sign that Soviet’s manufacturing and construction industries were so in bad shape that they could not even design and construct the first impression of Moscow on their own. Today conditions in Russia are better; most of the construction work is done by the Russian businesses though they may be close allies of Putin.
President Leonid Brezhnev had high expectations of projecting country’s military and economic prosperity from the platform of 1980 Moscow Olympics. His expectations turned into shock when nearly 65 countries led by the US boycotted the games as Soviets were occupying Afghanistan. Today in a way US is occupying Afghanistan and they are playing in Sochi and even leading the tally. Putin has same expectations from Sochi winter Olympics of projecting the wealth and prosperity of the new Russia which Medvedev and he built together in past 14 years.
