Russia, one of the biggest sports superpower hosts winter olympics at Sochi for the first time. 22nd Sochi Winter Olympics opening ceremony took off with a two-and-a-half hour show which showcased Russian history, a ride from ancient Russia to the modern Russia. Accompanied with the music by the great Russian composers like Tchaikovsky, Stravinsky, Prokofiev and Sviridov, it portrayed the path Russia took to become the country it is now, presenting the highlights of its culture.
Being a student of Russian language, it was interesting the way Russian letters were introduced in an opening video and each letter was matched with scenes of culture and history. There was a globe on the ground which indicated the position of the country as the contingents of various nations marched. Unfortunately India is not playing under the banner of India. Russian contingent marched with the popular Russian pop song by t.A.T.u. not gonna get us (nas ne dagonyat). The song is from mid 2000s and is more popular outside Russia than in Russia.
While western media is showcasing only the controversial 4 out 5 olympic rings from Sochi. We have compiled and showing some of the most fascinating pictures of the Sochi winter olympics opening ceremony. Feel free to tweet, share and pin it on pinterest.
